It makes me miss being part of a scene, putting out records and trying to be part of something positive. It also makes me angry thinking of what happened to the scene I used to care so much about...I guess that's what getting old is about. You start to rant about the good old days hey?

When I first started this blog, I figured it would be stupid if I ever wrote about any of the bands on the label I used to run. However, after my post on the Everymen I have sort of rekindled my love for bands that never made it. Something that I can easily say qualifies any band that was on my little record label. Long story short I've decided that those bands are no longer safe from my blog.

When I first heard Angry Agency, I instantly fell in love with the crappy (sorry if any of you read this) demo. The recording was sub-par, the cover was weak at best but there was something there that I just loved. After speaking with Dale (the bass player) I knew this was the kind of band I wanted on Core-upt. They cared about music, politics,doing it DIY and weren't opposed to having a good time. By the time AA had recorded their first legit cd, the ska fad had all but faded into small pockets, ruined by the bastardization of the 3rd wave movement and mainstream media. I was pretty sure I would never sell a copy outside of London Ontario and to the few friends I knew who still liked to skank. Thankfully, Angry Agency had more faith and they toured the album and we actually sold out of our first pressing. The Band headed into the studio two more times recording two great follow ups and again putting up good numbers especially for my little label. My biggest regret is that neither Core-upt or Angry Agency had enough money to produce a really great album or give them the proper push they deserved. Not to say the albums were bad in anyway but if anyone got a chance to see AA live they would know that there was something there that just wasn't captured on any of the recordings. Oh well enough blabbing about AA...here are some of my favorite songs from Angry Agency!

Gone Goodbye Maybe I'll See You Someday

The past weekend I was lucky enough to attend the CJSW's 25th Anniversary show. For those of you unfamiliar with CJSW it is the local university radio station and home to the best radio shows in town. As a kid growing up it was the only place you could hear local bands and indie/punk/metal on a regular basis. Not only that it was the only station in town that supported our little record label. So when I got the invite to the invite I was pretty stoked. Then when I saw the line up of bands stoked moved to giddy as they had somehow convinced a number of local bands to re-unite for this one show. Some of these included bands that haven't played in town for a good 10 years. Some of these were Wagbeard, Field Day, The Corta Vita, Mico and the band I was most excited to see The Everymen. All in all it was a great event. Very well organized (which I won't lie shocked me). In fact it was pretty much like a high school reunion only one I actually wanted to go to. Thanks to everyone at CJSW for putting on a great show.

Back to the music now...if you made it through half of that last paragraph you may have noticed that I mentioned one of my favorite local acts....The Everymen who reunited for this show. I haven't been this stoked to see a local band in awhile. The Everymen were hands down one of my favorite local bands growing up. Not only were they talented musicians, they were all great guys who put a lot of work into the band and to the local music scene. No matter how many times I've seen them live they always impressed. Last Saturday was no different. I've decided to put up a few of my favorite tracks for you to enjoy. If I am correct the only available cd is The Everymen vs The Lowest Common Denominator and I am sure they appear on a number of local compilations. I don't often write about hip hop here not because I dont find the odd album that I love. More so because I feel anything I know about hip hop, either people know about, or probably dont want to know about. Today is an exception. Im sure some of you have heard this already, but Enter The Magical Mystery Chambers is something worth writing about. The album is a mash up album or remix album I am not totally sure on the difference using Wu Tang vocal tracks on Tom Caruana beats that sample Beatles songs. I figured this may interest some of you.

So I assume anyone that reads this blog is sick of looking at my picks for the year, I know I am. My resolution this year was to work harder at my job instead of slacking on the Internet during the day, today I have given up. Actually, to be truthful I've been crazy busy so I haven't had the chance to slack. That being said here is my first post of the new year:

Cauldron is a metal band from Toronto. Now I know what you are thinking there are probably at least 10 metal bands named Cauldron! While this is most likely true I urge you to check out Toronto's version. These guys play metal the way is supposed to be played or at least in this shitty blog writers opinion.

Another year another list!

I am assuming the rest of you music junkies out there have been going through your collections and trying to put together a best of list for 2009 and I am no different. I'll admit that I thought it would be tough to get this list together but there were some tasty gems that came out in 09 , here is what I came up with:

1.Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
The album that spun a thousand remixes on the Internet and maybe one of the coolest fan made videos I've ever seen.

2.The Menzingers - Hold On Dodge Ep
I know it was only an EP but it leaves you craving the full length. Sunday Morning is stuck on repeat in my head.

3.Children - Hard Times Hanging At The End of the World
There are a lot of trash metal revival bands out there all of the sudden. Children is what they all should aim to sound like. The video for Power Spirit sold me on these guys even if they look like they should be on LATFH instead of in a kick ass band. Go amplify the Doom!

4.Dear Landlord - Dream Homes
I'll be honest I only picked up this album because for some reason the cover looked like a Jawbreaker album and I figured this looks alright...how is that for impulse? While Dear Landlord sound nothing like Jawbreaker they do play some awesome pop punk. If you like Anthems and fast songs, Dear Landlord is for you.

5.Strung Out - Agents of the Underground
Anyone that knows me well, knows I love Strung Out, but even the biggest fans can admit something has been missing for awhile from these guys. It is something that I have been trying to figure out and couldn't put my finger on it. Agents of the Underground seems to have fixed the problem because it is the best Strung Out album since Twisted by Design and that is a lot for me to say.

6.Amanda Blank - I Love You
I first came across Amanda Blank via Spank Rock and I have been waiting ever since to hear an album. When it finally came out I was happy to find that she hadn't toned it down for a solo effort. If you have issues with language and sexual content this one isn't for you.

7.Propagandhi -Supporting Caste
I'd be lying if I said Propagandhi broke new ground with Supporting Caste but really do they need to? When you buy a Propagandhi album you know what you are getting and you better fucking enjoy it.

8.Dead Man's Bones - S/T
Ryan Gosling sings in a band? Really that dude from Breaker High and the Notebook? WTF and it is good? Damn good to be exact. Deadman's Bones is the perfect soundtrack for a spooky late night drive.

9.E-603 - Torn Up
Everyone raves about Girl Talk and if you are a fan you owe it to yourself to check out E-603.

10.NOFX - Coaster
Having put out some of my favorite punk albums , NOFX sort of got semi boring to me. That isn't to say I didn't enjoy the releases, I just sort of knew what to expect and the songs ran their course. Coaster woke me up. It is one of the better NOFX albums released to date. If you aren't a NOFX fan it isn't going to convert you but if you are chances are you love it as much as I do.

11.Lawrence Arms - Buttsweat and Tears
Another EP on the list ... it happens! If you like Lawrence Arms you probably already own this and I don't need to sell you on why!

12.Owl City - Ocean Eyes
I'll probably catch some slack for this, now that Owl City is everywhere. Did he get a Mac or Telus commercial yet?

13.Nihlist USA - Blood Portraits
Thrash revival nuff said! I can't wait for these guys to get bigger.

14.The Mighty Mighty Bosstones - Pinpoints and Gin Joints
Ska is dead? Nah..someone forgot to tell the Bosstones because they are still killing it! Granted I just got this album but as of now I can say its the best work since Lets Face It.

15.You Say Party! We Say Die! - XXXX
XXXX is killer. Think Le Tigre. It is a way more polished album then the previous You Say Party We Say Die albums and although this genre is taking a beating due to over saturation. I gotta say XXXX is one of those albums that you will probably go back to and think yeah this was great!

16.North Lincoln - Midwestern Blood
A lot of bands are doing the hot water music/Samiam thing these days. North Lincoln is one of the better ones. I know a bunch of people are raving about Nothington and I have nothing against them. Heck I'll admit it I like them, but personally if you are looking for something along those lines I suggest picking up Midwestern Blood.

17. Lullabye Arkestra - Threats/Worship
Going off the name one would think that Lullabye Arkestra were probably an indie rock band along the lines of The Arcade Fire boy would you be wrong. Instead Threats and Worship is an in your face album that is loud, sludgy rock n roll with metal and punk undertones.

18. Cobra Skulls - American Rubicon
Cobra Skulls may have stopped writing songs about Cobras but they haven't stopped writing songs that are instantly catchy.

19. Chiddy Bang - The Swelly Express Mixtape
I realize this isn't a proper release and yes it is a mixtape, but Philly's Chiddy Bang did such a great job I had to add it to the list.

20. Brand New - Daisy
I fought with myself about putting Daisy on the list. Not because it is a bad album, in fact it is a good album but perhaps it is because this is the album I expected the most from. I keep thinking that when I listen to it, something will click in me and this album will be fantastic. Instead it is good and maybe I would even as far as to say that if this was a different band I would have ranked it higher . Instead I fight with my emotions on this one. That in itself I guess merits making the list.

100 "Punk" albums from the years 1990-the present! Pt 1.

I have finally completed my list of essential "punk" albums from 1990-the present. I'd be lying if this was an easy task and I'll be the first to admit this list will have its flaws and debatable choices but that's what makes list exciting. I'd love to hear your opinions on this and I can't wait to see some of the suggestions if there are any. Feel free to pick apart the list or make your own. If you do I'll post it.

A few things before we start:

1.) I've picked 100 albums I could have easily picked more. Originally I had this pegged to be a 50 album list but I couldn't even come close to that number. I guess I am not picky enough.

2.) I did not rank the albums because that would have been a lot of work and I am one of those half assed kind of guys. Plus I don't I really think I could actually rank them or come up with a system of ranking.

2.) The term "Punk" for purpose of this list is defined as bands that have come out of the punk rock scene. So bands like DeathCab and Weezer wouldn't necessarily make the list, but CapnJazz and The GetUpKids would - based more out the scenes/labels then their sound.

3.) I have decided to only pick one album from each band that makes the list. Obviously, that makes the list a little flawed because there are some bands that have at least 2 albums that should be on this list if not more. That being said when I debated picking another album from the artist it will be posted along side the pick.

4.) Since the list is 100 albums I will have to post it in chunks.

If you have been reading my little blog for awhile here you would have noticed that I have posted about local indie rock n roll band Beija Flor before and the solo effort put forth by SAVK. If you haven't go back read it, check both bands out. If you have and you enjoyed both of those you might be interested in The Magnetic North which is a solo project featuring Paul Van Kampen of Beija Flor. I am not sure if he has plans to release these anytime soon but after checking out The Magentic North's myspace I really hope he does. All 6 tracks are excellent so go check them out and if you live in Calgary go check The Magnetic North out.

So Halloween has come and gone which means no more horror business for a little bit around here. So yeah it is back to status quo for MOPR. I'll keep posting you keep reading! Deal? Currently, I am tossing around the idea of trying to put together a list that I would hope could get some discussion going around here. The idea comes from a road trip discussion a few of my friends and myself had where we debated the most important punk albums of our generation which essentially would be from 1990 - until the present. Obviously this is a pretty vague topic so I went to some trusted friends and we came up with the following:

'The bands, songs, albums, labels and people that defined and shaped punk rock - 1990-2009' with the term punk being defined as in bands that have come out of the punk rock scene. So bands like DeathCab and Weezer wouldn't necessarily make the list, but CapnJazz and The GetUpKids would - based more out the scenes/labels then their sound. Another example for you to get the idea , a band like Cherry Poppin' Daddies could warrant attention but not Brian Setzer.

It will probably take a while to compose this list but I hope to have something together in the next few weeks. Until then I'm taking suggestions in the comments section. Lets get some discussion going!

Ghouls Night Out

I was forwarded this amazing clip of the 'Richard Pryor Show' which words cannot really describe. Seriously you have to watch the full thing to appreciate how funny and crazy this is, especially because of when it aired which I believe is sometime in the late 70s. The funny thing is that it reminded me of something I sort of took part of many halloweens ago that involved the not so legendary "Dirty Bourbons". The Dirty Bourbons were a joke that was passed off as a legit band for the night and had through the favour of a friend been given a pretty sweet halloween gig opening up for the Dudes. The intent was to play some covers, get pretty drunk, get some laughs. The schtick had been done before at Christmas and went fairly well. However, this time the Bourbons decided to write their own material instead of doing covers. Furthermore it was clear that the stage show would take precedence over any sort of musicanship. Which was enhanced by the massive consumption of booze that would have made Nikki Sixx proud. This however turned into 3 things:

1.) The band not writing any songs until the night before and resulted in 4 poorly written songs and a somewhat horrible cover of a Misfits track. This somehow lasted almost 2 hours on stage. Including an intro that went on way too long and playing one song twice...maybe even back to back...who knows. everyone was pretty drunk.
2.) Showmanship turned into proclaiming that the Bourbons were the best band of all time and subsequently harassing the crowd. This involved yelling at them, kicking them, spitting on them, eventually a fist fight, and pretty much the biggest gong show of all time. There were guitars smashed, guitars set ablaze with fireworks, beer bottles thrown, jumping off speaker towers and even smashed drum kits.
3.) It was pretty much legendary seeing as no one was there to see the Bourbons, the Dudes had to play a super short set, and they pissed off pretty much everyone. In fact on one local website a girl posted that the Bourbons had ruined her Halloween. Personally I cannot think of a better compliment.

now I've debated ever releasing any of the footage because its so over the top and stupid and it doesn't really capture any of the night. (the battery ran out after the intro and first two songs and before the mayhem really kicked up) but in the spirit of Halloween I figured why not let the world laugh. So here you go:

Quick Editors Note: I will post links to my Halloween mixes later tonight along with a couple of funny videos. Now on to some music that we can all enjoy err at least music I enjoy.

For some reason I have been on a late 90s early 2000's emo/pop punk indie kick. You know before it got super commercial and over produced. Well maybe it always was but during that time it was super new and interesting to me. Anyway, since I feel somewhat lazy and I can't focus on one band I decided to post a few of the tracks I've gone back and re-discovered. I'd love to hear if you can think of some great tracks from this era. Let me know in the comments!

A break from the screaming

I've decided to take a break from the Halloween music this morning because I was getting bored of it. I'm sure I will post more this afternoon. Until then I've decided to post about Mischief Brew who have a sort of Halloween sounding name but really have nothing to do with it. Rather they play DIY folk punk and anarcho-punk music and have some great songs. I'm not the biggest fan of everything they do but they certainly put out some great tracks. One in particular has caught my ear. Punx Win is a great song and anyone who has ever played in a band or toured can relate to the lyrics. The acoustic and electric version are on a split 8" with Andrew Jackson Jihad. I haven't seen it any stores yet but its worth the download for sure and probably the purchase. I couldn't find a streaming version of the song or a video that wasn't live so I will post a few of the other songs I enjoy plus the live version.

So Halloween is almost here and I'm working on getting together the playlist for my annual Halloween party *which I hope to post on here..granted I have the time to mix it all into a few songs. I'm the first to admit that I like to argue about pointless things! I would assume if you are reading my little blog you probably enjoy a great music debate. One of the blogs I regularly check out is Music Ruined My Life. It is a great source for music and discussion. One of the more recent posts dealt with the topic of the "Great American Band" or as was stated the American Beatles. Jeff the author of the blog argued that Husker Du would be his pick and while he makes a valid case. I'd like to make a case for another "Great American Band" and it is one that most I would suspect will mock me for but here goes. My choice would be KISS. Not because they are by any means the best band out there actually one could argue they were average musicians but like them or not KISS has had a great influence on American music and its culture and here is why:

1.) The KISS stage show changed the rock concert experience. They were not the first but they went bigger and better (?). How very American of them!
2.) KISS has managed to stick around
3.) The band has sold over 19 million records in the United States[2]and their worldwide sales exceed 80 million albums (Source Wiki…is that legit? Haha!)
4.) KISS experimented to try and stay relevant and somehow managed to succeed most of the time. Usually when a band begins to fade and they re-tool it’s a huge failure. Somehow KISS managed to revamp themselves on 3 separate occasions. In 1983 with sales declining the band revamped,-ditched the make up and saw a resurgence of fans. Then again in the 90s as their fans declined the somehow captivated fans again by reforming with the make-up and had two huge successful tours around the world.
5.) KISS has influenced a number of bands and artists in a number of genres. Obviously they have played a huge part in rock n roll/metal but they have also influenced major artists in other genres. See Garth Brooks…*the fact that I know that makes me want to shoot myself.
6.) KISS’s fans transcend genres where a band like Husker Du or the Ramones is probably more relevant to someone who enjoys alt/indie/punk music. The Beatles also transcend genres
7.) KISS is big business. Like the Beatles, KISS is more than a band it is a brand. Whether the Beatles intended or wanted to be they are a brand. KISS on the other hand embraced it. Plus is there anyone more business orientated in Rock n’Roll than Gene Simmons?
8.) The KISS ARMY - Fans make the band
9.) Like the Beatles, the members each brought something very different to each album. You can always tell a Paul, John, George song much like a Gene, Paul or Ace song. Something I would argue made both bands great. It made albums diverse and exciting. I suppose this is true on a lesser scale for Ringo and Peter Criss. Maybe you could argue that both of them are jokes? (kidding of course)
KISS are no means the coolest band to pick for this but it is hard to dispute that they are the one of the great American Bands.

Today's letter is the letter "M" and I am stoked because I picked the Menzingers as today's band. I've been pretty excited about this band ever since I heard their cover of straight to hell. Currently "Hold On, Dodge" is my favorite album of 09 and it is only an EP which I had to order online. I seriously recommend picking it up. My record player doesn't even work and I bought it what does that say? Probably that I am a fool. I keep hoping they will announce a tour of Western Canada but so far nothing. Anyway enough blabbing, onto the music because that is what you are here for!

It is October 1st today, I awoke to frost that needed to be scraped off my car and leaves on the ground. Normally, this would signal a bout of depression as I know once this starts its not long before Winters cold hands grasp hold of Calgary's neck not letting go until God knows when. Despite all this Fall is a great time for music. Something about the cold air and the nights getting darker seems to invoke great music listening. Which brings me to Dead Man's Bones. For those who aren't familiar with the band it is a project by actor Ryan Gosling who most will remember from that movie with that other girl from Canada but he will always be the annoying kid on Breaker High to me and Zack Shields (who I know nothing about). As some of you may recall I have already posted once about how most actors should stay away from music...Dead Man's Bones is one of the exceptions. I actually think Gosling might be a cool guy or at least he has really good taste in music. As one might expect from the name Dead Mans Bones has a dark and creepy sound to it perfect for a fall night. It is light and simple with great vocals and arrangements. I am not sure if it is the imagery on the website but for some reason it invokes memories of the Haunted Mansion ride at Disneyland but thankfully not of the failed Eddie Murphy movie. In many ways it reminds me of the Arcade Fire if the Arcade Fire wrote an album for Halloween. I suggest you go pick it up on October 6th I know I will be. Until then :

Alpha-Bits "K"

Today's Letter is "K" or at least I hope it is, I didn't check before I went to post this.
I am going to go with the letter and today's band is The Killing Tree. The Killing Tree isn't around anymore *which is a good thing...you don't want trees killing you right? Seriously though they were a post hardcore band that featured Rise Against front man Tim McIlrath and former Rise Against guitarist and member of the Falcon Todd Mohney. If you like Rise Against the Killing Tree is a great pick up.

I'm not sure if you can even purchase any of the albums anymore I know I couldn't find any of them anywhere in town but here is a site to download all three releases. Do what you want with it...I wash my hands of the matter.

One of the first "punk" bands I got really into was Strung Out. I was introduced to them via friends and Survival of the Fattest in high school. Coming from more of a metal background, I really enjoyed that Strung Out seemed to lean towards more of a metal punk hybrid rather than just straight forward skate punk. After seeing them play live at the Republik that summer they skyrocketed up the list of my favorite bands. Suburban Teenage Wasteland Blues become a standard in my car and when Twisted by Design came out it became and shockingly still is one of my favorite albums. While the band has never really topped either of those albums again they still put out fairly solid records but something seemed to lack that excitement that I once felt for them. That was until the other day when they posted a full stream of their latest release Agents of the Underground. I was completely caught off guard with how great it was and so far I have listened to that stream every day at work waiting for today's release date. Now I know its not cool to like bands like Strung Out but seriously I can see this album making a heavy rotation in my life so I figured I had to fill you in. Hopefully some of you share my enthusiasm.

Today is all about firsts for MOPR. Normally, I bore you all with my quick two cents about a band that I think people should take a chance on but today I am letting someone else take over the pulpit, my good friend Nate Luit recently caught up with Casey Lewis of "The Evidence" and wrote this excellent article for all of you to enjoy.

Self described as crotchety and cynical, Casey Lewis leads me down the sidewalk outside his home to what looks like a garage. He opens the door and this garage turns into Echobase Studios. Built from scratch, this is Casey’s office. The walls look like a guitarist’s wet dream with Fenders and Gibsons decorating the drywall. There’s a huge recording space and a production booth you would expect to see at a major label studio.

Casey’s music career has been decades in the making. He’s been with dozens of bands, all of them shaping who he is as a musician today. Here’s The Evidence.

“I think the moment that you say that anything in your past is dead to you, you’re kind of belittling its contribution to who you are. I don’t think any of us would be the musicians or the people that we are if we hadn’t been in the bands that we had been in before.”

The Evidence began in 2000 under the name “The Failure”. Despite the name, the band was anything but and had two releases to their credit. By 2005 the band felt it was time to restructure. A new bass player was added to the line up, and as a result of a name conflict with another group, “The Failure” decided to change to The Evidence.
“I think evolution is a constant, in life as in music. It’s not something where you have a point in time and you stop being one thing and start being something else. You can see that the evolution is present even from our first record as “The Failure” to our second record as “The Failure”. They’re completely different.”
The Evidence have just released their third album entitled “Polarity” which is an obvious progression from their previous releases.
“I would hope that there is a certain level of maturity creeping into the things that we write now, a little bit more analysis. I think the tendency of writing songs when you’re young is to cast blame on something or somebody, instead of trying to analyze something and break it into all of its components and actually make sense of it.”
One of the most notable traits of The Evidence is that all of it’s members are not only musicians but also businessmen. Casey (drummer/singer/songwriter) also plays the role of record producer/sound engineer/studio owner and operator. Dean (guitarist) also wears the “indie record label owner and operator” hat. Tyler (guitarist) comes from a photographic and graphic design background, and Randy (bassist) is a butcher by trade….I guess he provides the meals.
The Evidence is completely self sufficient and have boiled the “do it yourself” philosophy down to its purest form. Putting out a DIY record is nothing new. In fact it’s the only way for a band to get out of the basement and onto the ground floor. But to put out a good one, well that’s what separates the bands that have a chance, from the groups who may never see the roads beyond their jam space.
“It’s really great to be in the position that we are to be DIY, that we’re making product that’s good and making records that sound good, but it’s taken a long time, ‘cause the learning curve is very, very intense.”
It’s been an uphill battle defining roles and trusting each other within these roles.
“I think over time we’ve really started to develop a dynamic on how those things work. In earlier days, I think the tendency was to intrude on each other’s areas a little bit more. I would tell Tyler what the pictures should look like or Tyler would tell Dean what he should do for promotion, or they would both come in and tell me I need to mix the bass drum down and the guitars up”
Another defining trait of this band is their constant search for balance and that’s what has helped them all settle into their roles.
“I think we’ve actually come to a point where we really respect what one another does and their expertise at it, and that we don’t always know best.”
When a band assumes total control and responsibility over its product there can be some headaches along the way; however, in the end, it’s worth it.
“Because you’re invested in every part of the process, you don’t always have an easy time of getting to that point. Sometimes it requires a little bit more work. It feels way better to be like ‘we did this ourselves and we don’t need you’, whoever that ‘you’ is. It’s an empowering place to be”.

As the music industry continues to die its slow death, and your local record store becomes more and more cluttered with anything but music, it is bands like The Evidence who will continue to put out DIY records and keep independent music afloat.
One of the most common themes within this dialogue with Casey is balance. Ironically, this is also the common thread found throughout their newest release “Polarity”. It’s a pretty broad term, but something that everyone can identify with on some level.

“People are inconstant. I know myself that I can be a real bastard to work with sometimes, really difficult, and really crotchety and moody when it comes to the work itself. If it’s not perfect I tend to get a little bent out of shape. Searching for balance is a constant struggle even on a personal level. It’s something that I’m trying to do everyday. If I ever manage to do it, that’ll probably be the end of my life.”

A lot of Casey’s writing on this record comes from experience. Though not every song is about a specific event in his life, each works to cultivate the broader, more analytical commentary of the album. It’s a reflection of that eternal pursuit for equilibrium.

“You search for a certain amount of stillness in yourself so that you can be constant and be a complete person, but the irony is that once you achieve that state, you’ve achieved perfect order, and without chaos, order is stagnation, so you actually don’t grow anymore”.

Today's letter "J"

Jerusalem and no I'm not talking about the place, I'm talking about the 70s British heavy rock band produced and managed by Ian Gillan of Deep Purple fame. I found out about this band while listening to mind grapes on CJSW and had to pick it up. If you like Sabbath or any sort of 70s heavy rock n roll Jerusalem is a must add to your collection. I'll stop writing now and let the music speak for itself:

H is for Hold Steady and that is good enough for me! Over the past few years the Hold Steady have worked their way into my heart. Funny enough they were a band I refused to listen to because they were getting so much hype. But a year after Boys and Girls in America came out, I finally sat down and gave it a real listen. Thank God I did. The music is great and the lyrics are even better. I know some people can't get passed the vocals but for me they really sell the songs. I hope you too can enjoy some massive nights listening to Hold Steady like I do. (you see what I did there? I used to the title of a song in a sentence...clever hey? how about that Judge Ito?) .....seriously though here is some Hold Steady for you to enjoy!

Letter "I" now I could go the easy route and go with some Iron Maiden here but let's face it if you haven't heard Iron Maiden yet I doubt I am going to turn you on to them. Plus there is always next time the letter I comes around. Instead I give you the Impossibles. A indie rock ska band from Austin Texas who sound like Weezer if Weezer wrote more pop punk and ska songs. The Impossibles have long since broke up and even worked on a reunion tour before a second break up back in 2002. Footnote*That makes me feel really old!*

Today's pick is Field Day who are probably one of the more famous Calgary punk bands. I hear they are still big in Germany. When I was 15 and started going to shows these guys were the guys to see. I couldn't find a video for what I would say is the best Field Day song "Enough for Two" which does exist but not on youtube, but I did come across this gem with a little help from my buddy Justin.

The Neckers are this weeks hometown chumps and chumpettes. To be honest I am not that sure they still are playing that much. I know that the lead singer Bil has formed a solo project called Bil Hetherington and The Asian Tigers which is getting a lot of hype around town. Either way the Neckers always put on a great show and had a ton of energy on stage.

I loved this song so much when I first came across it that I went to all my favorite record shops to try and track it down based on just one song. Not only could I not find it there but I couldn't even find a download of the album. This forced me to search high and low online *well actually one search of Amazon* to track it down. I don't normally put that kind of effort into an album because I would rather head down to the record store and get me greedy hands on an album right away. That is my own personal hang up though. Either way this album was somewhat difficult to find but if you get a chance it is worth it.

Say what you want about Vice and how scenester it is, but you can't argue that they do put out some really good bands. I was just checking out their site today and came across Lullabye Arkestra. I'll be honest, I probably wouldn't have checked them out based on the name. What did catch my eye was that the title of the song posted was " We Fuck The Night" a title like that warrants a download. Hell I'd argue that if you are going to title a song "We Fuck The Night" you pretty much have to make it kick ass or suck so bad that you make The Stereos look cool. Thankfully "We Fuck The Night" is like a shark attacking a cross Atlantic flight in mid air pretty fucking cool.

Wow, 3 posts in one day. I am sure my work is suffering today because of it , nah who am I kidding. Normally, I'd wait to post something until tomorrow but I just came across this pretty kick ass metal band last night and did some research on them and felt the need to share.

Children are from New York and are made up of members of STREETS , Early Man, and one other dude who I don't know. Regardless I think the music pretty much speaks for itself. If I was going out tonight I'd want Children playing on my stereo!

Dead Disco

Dead Disco were a British Indie pop/electronic musical group formed in 2005 by Lucy Catherwood, Marie France and Victoria Hesketh(Now known as Little Boots). *Stolen from Wikipedia because I am a lazy guy. I wish I could have done this during University.
